A beautiful Swiss resort town surrounded by mountains, Engelberg is located in the Uri Alps.

On a blue bird day in early March, seven coach buses of students and teachers descended upon Engelberg for four days of skiing and sun.

On our first evening in town, the entire Grade 10 class set out for a nighttime hike.

Riding the Titlis gondola in the dark, we arrived at the edge of a frozen lake.

We snapped into snowshoes and walked the lake’s edge under the light of a crescent moon.

The constellations were breathtaking against the gorgeous night sky.

Our days (and nights) were packed with activities, from ice skating and downhill skiing to snowmobiling.

My students took part in sledging, riding up a chairlift and down upon a wooden sled.

Thankful that my friends Cece and Dorka were among the chaperones on the trip!

A medieval town, Engelberg was born when monks passed through the valley in 1120 AD.

Kloster Engelberg, a Benedictine monastery, is still active with over 30 monks in residence.

The Swiss-German fare (fondue!), bakeries, and a coffee roastery ensured that we were well fed during our stay.

Our final day involved a gondola ride up to a glacier located at 10,000 feet.

As can only be said about a trip with high schoolers – it was a success as no life was destroyed, nor created.

Back home to this goober and on to the next!
