Although October was a rainy month here in Lugano, I am pleased report that the majesty of the mountains is still very apparent – blanketing us in an almost mystical fog.

My love for this special spot continues to grow, as does my appreciation for my students and friends. Moloko’s arrival played a big part in making Lugano feel like home, as did a visit from my friends Stephen and Velora, who came to housesit while I was at my brother’s wedding in San Diego.

In the days before I departed, I had a fantastic time showing them around Lugano. Playing tour guide always makes a new place feel a bit more like home.

We certainly made the most of it, despite the weather. Lugano didn’t fail to impress – they’ve promised to return next fall.

While my students were touring various corners of Europe for academic travel, I headed west to California to join the wedding festivities in sunny San Diego.

Taking place in Balboa Park, the wedding went off without a hitch. Katie and Brett had planned quite a show, pulling in friends and family from around the globe. It was wonderful to catch up with folks I hadn’t seen in years and to be a part of this exciting step in their journey.

The weather in Southern California was gorgeous, allowing for an outdoor ceremony and a reception in the Prado courtyard. Lots of laughs and memories shared of those who couldn’t be with us in person.

Before I knew it, it was time to head back to work and this little goober (above, right). I flew in over the Alps just as the sun was rising. My train ride from the Milan airport was like a fairytale – fog awash in golden light. As jetlagged as I was, the whole journey was very much worth it. After three months in Lugano, it was awfully nice to feel that I was coming home.
